Charles Dickens, who was born in Portsmouth on February 7, 1812, is one of the representative authors of British realistic literature in the 19th century. Like many other famous novelists, Charles Dickens’ miserable experiences also gave him great help in his writing. He lived an eventful life in his childhood, such as doing various jobs at his early age in order to support his poor family. That’s why Charles Dickens had a deep understanding of people at the bottom who shared a pitiful living. Undoubtedly, the tough experience in his early life made a dominant contribution to his novels, and set the main tone of his novels.
As a prolific and outstanding novelist of modern Britain, in all his life, Charles Dickens produced more than a dozen novels, over twenty novellas, numerous short stories, speeches, essays, travel notes and so on. Most of his novels, on the one hand, aimed to reveal the hypocrisy, greed, mean and brutality of the upper class; on the other hand, he described the dire conditions of lower class and passionately eulogized the true, good and beauty of humanity. By combing realism with nuanced description of mentality in literary technique, his works achieved extremely popularity from all over the world and were handed down from age to age.
Great Expectations is an important novel in his later works. This novel combines his experiences in his youth with his ideas about critical spirit and humanity. The achievement of Great Expectations lies in the fact that Charles Dickens has further explored the unfairness and hypocrisy of the capitalist society and expresses his strong spirit of humanity. Since 19th century, the researches on Great Expectations have been abundant and various at home and abroad. These researches focus on symbolism, themes, characters, philosophy, environment and so on. A foreign critic, Edgar Johnson, speaks highly of Great Expectations, considering it as the most perfect novel of Dickens’ works in construction and language. Jane Smiley holds the belief that the protagonist, Pip, reveals the social situation of Victoria times vividly. Zhao Yanqiu also points out that the novel is a criticism to the values of capitalist society in the 19th century by describing changes of Pip’s characters. Grahame Smith elaborates some images in the novel and reveals that these images imply Pip’s subtle changes of his soul, which is typical of the novel that the internal transformation in Pip is reflected in external description. He Qingmei illustrates that the real great expectation is the maturity of Pip’s characters and his spiritual independence, which shows Dickens’ optimistic spirit. Zhang Jian reveals what causes the changes of Pip’s characters. Jiang Fuyuan cites the theory of psych-analysis to explore that Pip’s changes are rooted in his instinct desire, which can be interpreted as a close relationship between psychology and destiny. Lei Ping reveals that the development of Pip’s characters is connected with the social circumstances he lives in.
