In this chapter, the paper mainly focuses on the backgrounds of The Kite Runner. Then, a summary of this novel will be given to let readers have a rough idea about the plot. In addition, the paper will summarize the previous researches on this novel.
1.1Background information
1.1.1 The author, Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini, the author of The Kite Runner, is an Afghanistan American writer who was born on March 4, 1965 in Kabul. His father is a diplomat and his mother is a teacher at a girl’s school. In 1976, his father was stationed to the Afghan Embassy in Pairs for 4 years’ terms, so the whole family moved to France. Two years later, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, then Hosseini’ s father decided to apply the United States for political asylum, so they immigrated into San Jose, California. At first, life was so difficult that they needed to receive welfares and food stamps from the American government for living. In 1984, Hosseini graduated from senior high school, and then was enrolled in Santa Clara University of California San Diego School of Medicine to study biology and gained his Medical Degree in 1993. In 1996, he finished his internship in medical school of Mount Zion in Los Angels, California (Shang& Liu, 2007:9). Khaled Hosseini showed a special talent in literature when he was a child. While in medical practice, Hosseini began to write his first novel, The Kite Runner. In March, 2001, this novel made him well-known.
