Sense and sensibility are the most important emotions in love and life, faced with the dilemma, people usually do not know how to make a choice, so the western researchers’ study of Wuthering Heights has been lasting for 150 years, divided into three stages, each stage has its own new discovery. For example, some researchers started from the writer’s character, the famous writer Virginia Woolf’s father, Leslie Stephen pointed out Emily’s inborn and subjective thought, “She represents a kind of pure passion” (Yang Jingyuan, 1983) In China, Chinese research started from the 1980s. Compared with foreigners’ research, we have achieved little, no matter in quality and quantity. Some researchers aimed at studying Heathcliff and Cathy’s love story[ In order to distinguish Catherine Earnshaw and her daughter Catherine Edgar, the mother is identified as Cathy and the daughter Catherine in this essay.], reached out different conclusion, but some others aimed at the story’s theme and narration, they argued that the narrators’ angle were also very important. Some researchers used the way of Chinese classical thought “Unity of Heaven and Man”, for example, “The unity of heaven and man is equal to the unity of man and environment” (Chen Yanyan, 2008). There are several ways to detect the story, this thesis chooses to research the sense and sensibility of Wuthering Heights, because they are emotions full of everyone’s life, how to balance them in daily life is still a question which deserves our continuous attention. Make a correct balance is essential.
This thesis aims to study the sense and sensibility of Wuthering Heights through the time of the novel and the id and character of the main characters. Maybe it is the simplest and easiest angle, but it is also very intuitive. It will explain the characters’ change with time’s passing, and the eventually effect to their own lives. Meanwhile, how to make a decision between sense and sensibility is also a big question to all human beings.

Chapter 1 The Opposition of Sense and Sensibility

Since some old story human had been twined by two kind of emotions: sense and sensibility, no matter the story was about love or relationship. In Wuthering Heights, there were also these two emotions controlling everyone’s life. For example, Heathcliff was misleading in his deep love for Cathy, and Cathy was misleading in the chasing of profit. Everybody couldn’t make right decision. Meanwhile, the love of Heathcliff and Cathy were abnormal compared to the love of others. They shared the same emotions since they were children. They had a deep understanding of each other and the same hatred of their developing environment. To some extent, they are more real. They never hide their natural emotion, for example, Cathy could be hooked by a better social class, and after she married Edgar, she never hide her love for Heathcliff too. Sometimes human being must make a choice of sense and sensibility, it is no true or false, but related to our deep heart.
Wuthering Heights is about two love stories, Cathy and Heathcliff, Catherine and Hareton. It is also a story of two families which Emily wrote based on a real affair of what she saw and heard. So how could she write such a splendid tale?
In fact, Charlotte Bronte had already given us an answer after her sister Emily Bronte died. When Emily was young, she used to work as a teacher in Law Hill built by a man named Jack Sharp, whom Heathcliff is based on. Jack Sharp is an adopted son of old Walker, who had a big manor that is Walterclough Hall; and Wuthering Heights is based on it. (Yuan Haiwang, 1983)
