David Herbert Lawrence is an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist and literary critic, hailed by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism. He creats a great deal of works all his life, including novels, poetries, essays, travel notes and so on, and his most famous novels are Sons and Lovers, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Rainbow and Women in Love. In his writings, there are several explicit descriptions of sexuality, which couldn’t be accepted by people at that time, therefore his novels once were criticized as pornographic works. Actually Lawrence sees sex and intuition as key to undistorted perception of reality and a way to respond to the inhumanity of the industrial civilization. Although his doctrines of sexual freedom result in obscenity trials, they did have a deep effect on the relationship between literature and society.
As one of Lawrence’s best works, The Rainbow is considered a classical work of modernist novels because of its profound ideological content and bold psychological exploration of man-woman relationship. It recounted the lives of three generations of the Brangwens, a dynasty of farmers who lived in the east Midlands of England, on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and showed how their man-woman relationships changed against the increasing industrialization of Britain. The novel began with a description of the Brangwen family, then dealt with how Tom Brangwen fell in love with a Polish widow, Lydia, and lived basically harmoniously in spite of their differences in culture and spirit. However, with the deepening of the industrial civilization, more and more conflicts between Anna and Will of the second generation were shown. Finally after an intense struggle in spirit, they gave up the exploration of harmonious relationship and indulged in physical gratification. Compared with the first two generations, Ursula of the third generation was more rebellious and independent. She yearned to go outside and seek for ideal lives and love. The novel ended up with a rainbow arching across the sky, which suggested a new and promising future.
Women in Love, another masterpiece of Lawrence’s, is sequel to The Rainbow. The novel was written in the years before and during the first World War. It continued the loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula, and they had totally different end through their own exploration of love.
In the two novels, Lawrence makes a bold psychological exploration of various human relationships, and also makes an appeal for the return of a healthy human nature under the modern civilization.
So far, The Rainbow and Women in Love have received lots of reviews from the scholars and critics at home and abroad. As one main character of the two novels, Ursula often attracts the most attentions during her growth.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the rapid development of social productivity, more and more women began to break away from the tie of feudal shackles and entered society. But under the entrenched patriarchy, women were treated unfairly in many fields. Under this situation, modern western feminist movement broke out and women claimed for gender equality not only in marriage but also in society.
In this social background, Ursula, the representative of the young generation of the Brangwens, yearned to go outside and pursued freedom, independence, self-fulfillment, equality between men and women, and an ideal man-woman relationship based on the union of flesh and soul. My thesis attempts to make a study of Ursula’s growth from The Rainbow to Women in Love to see how she grows from a naive rebellious child to a mature modern woman.
